THE CHALLENGE
Having designed their Longhorn Network operation, ESPN now turned to Lawson to design a network dedicated to collegiate sports of the Southeastern Conference. The new SEC Network had to be integrated into their regional broadcast facility. The project required that much of the construction be conducted at night as well as in mu ltiple phases to minimize disruption of ongoing operations.
THE SOLUTION
Lawson designed the 30,000 square foot project to convert storage space into a new studio, create a new production control room, edit rooms, pantry, green rooms, and a transmission room, while also significantly expanding the screening area. The first phase involved renovating and relocating offices and workstations into an adjacent building to create the space required to expand the technical facilities. A 500 square foot addition was added to the building to accommodate security screening and deliveries. The existing generator was subsequently replaced to cover the electrical load of the facility.
Tasked with the infrastructure upgrades, Lawson also brought style and personality to the clean, functional ESPN aesthetic. Glass walls provide both privacy and transparency while furniture and finishes add interest and comfort. To accommodate large events and team functions, the serving counters in the pantry area can be conveniently moved to other areas within the redesigned space.
